Sequencing innovation rollout: Learning opportunity versus entry speed

چکیده
Research summary Our article examines the deliberate creation of learning opportunities in global rollout innovations. Some firms launch only a subset markets at first, with later launches being conditional on debut-market performance. Such sequencing decreases downside potential innovation failure but increases competitive preemption. Consistent this trade-off, handset makers during feature-phone era sequence more often when innovations are novel. Also consistent is that seems to respond firms' past experience and preemption, it begins offering strong signals success failure—markets competing sophisticated consumers, respectively. findings contribute understanding entry strategy opens avenues for researching intentional organizational experimentation. Managerial Firms can decide whether little by or everywhere once. Trial allow test commercial viability react outcomes before rolling out elsewhere, risks competitors get their first. An immediate launch, contrast, reduces scope preemption costs failure. uses data from industry highlight conditions shape decisions examine debut sought trial launches. tend novel particular, prior misses as well flops influences preference. begin competition discerning indicating an initial prioritization over monetization. Opportunities experimentation market thus ought feature strategic considerations timing.

Entry Threat, Entry Delay, and Internet Speed: The Timing of the U.S. Broadband Rollout∗
In a rapidly growing industry, potential entrants strategically choose which local markets to enter. Facing the threat of additional entrants, a potential entrant may lower its expectation of future profits and delay entry into a local market, or it may accelerate entry due to preemptive motives. Using the evolution of local market structures of broadband Internet service providers from 1999 to...

The development of rigorous molecular taxonomy pioneered by Carl Woese has freed evolution science to explore numerous cellular activities that lead to genome change in evolution. These activities include symbiogenesis, inter- and intracellular horizontal DNA transfer, incorporation of DNA from infectious agents, and natural genetic engineering, especially the activity of mobile elements. This ...
متن کاملFree entry versus socially optimal entry
This paper reconsiders the well known comparison of equilibrium entry levels into a Cournot industry under free entry and under the two commonly used socially optimal schemes. Allowing for the possibility of increasing returns to scale in production, this paper generalizes the conclusion of [Mankiw and Whinston, Rand J. 1986], that free entry yields more rms than the second-best socially optim...
متن کاملAuctions with Entry versus Entry in Auctions∗
We show that an auctioneer may prefer to restrict entry by exacting an admission fee to having an extra potential bidder in an auction setting with endogenous bidder entry. We also highlight that admission fees and reserve prices are different instruments in a setting with uncertainty over entry costs, and that optimal mechanisms in such settings may be higher-dimensional than in Myerson (1981)...
